Book Description

‘The believer’s faith, love and hope would all be well-served by prayerful and meditative reading of this little volume. Unbelievers willing to read a book of this order would find themselves often face to face with Christ, and the enticing challenge of his person and work. In essence, it is full of the gospel, and the aroma of Jesus rises from it sweetly. To have your eyes turned to and fixed upon him, you could do much worse than to purchase and peruse this volume.’ — JEREMY WALKER

‘This is a choice little book, well suited to readers of every sort. It moved this reviewer several times to pause in the enjoyment of emotions which are out of this world.’ — MAURICE ROBERTS

‘Each of the fifteen short chapters is introduced by an appropriate passage of Scripture, using the English Standard Version of the Bible, and is followed by the author’s commentary and comments. This handsome little book would serve as a good companion at the bedside or in the study, where a few moments meditation will uplift the mind and bless the soul.’ — THE GOSPEL MAGAZINE

Book Description

In the Foreword of this book Sir Marcus Loane writes, ‘The wonder and glory of the Resurrection are far greater than we can ever conceive. That great drama took place in the silent tomb a great while before it was yet day. No one else was there when God raised Jesus from the dead: no one saw it happen . . . All that was mortal had put on immortality: death was swallowed up in victory. And it was in his risen glory that he made himself known to his disciples . . .’

The chapters that follow are part of a well-loved and life-long pilgrimage for the author. The Resurrection story they recount comes across with a freshness and loveliness that is full of heart-warming fascination.

Book Description

Are our civil and religious freedoms under threat? According to some social commentators we are living in very uncertain times in which the freedoms we have long enjoyed are coming under increasing pressure. The liberty we take so much for granted may not be as secure as we think.

When this book was first published there was little or no sign of such danger on the horizon. In 1960 the church may have taken her religious freedom for granted and perhaps had forgotten the price paid by those who had ‘fought for freedom of truth and conscience, freedom for life and worship, freedom both as citizens and Christians’. Today in the West the prospect facing the church may well be one of suffering for the sake of the gospel and of sharing the common experience of our fellow Christians in many other parts of the world.

This prospect makes the story of the four men told in this book all the more fascinating and relevant. In the seventeenth century two Scottish Covenanters, Alexander Henderson and Samuel Rutherford, and two English Puritans, John Bunyan and Richard Baxter, were at the forefront in the struggle for liberty of conscience and freedom of worship. The story of their suffering and triumph, vividly told by a skilled biographer, enables the reader to visualize clearly both the problems which faced the church during that turbulent period of her history and the principles upon which our spiritual forefathers courageously took their stand. Of course, it would not be hard to point out their limitations and imperfections, their mistakes and failures; but they were fired by an inner nobility of motive and ideal which lifts them above petty criticism and gives them a lasting title to be known as men who were like Bunyan’s pilgrim, Valiant-for-Truth.

‘Sir Marcus Loane. . .possesses an acute historical sense and a vivid spiritual perception which combine to illustrate the story he has to tell.’ — TIMOTHY DUDLEY-SMITH

Book Description

This book tells the story of the English Reformation. It penetrates behind the facade of political change and acts of Parliament and brings to light the inner movement of the Spirit of God in men of humble heart and heroic faith. Its author believes there was a guiding hand at the helm of the Reformation, and that this divine guidance is most clearly revealed by a detailed study of the life and motives of those who were marked out as leaders of the movement and master of its theology.

The five men chosen for this purpose were the most significant of those who laid down their lives in the cause of the English Reformation. Bilney and Tyndale represent the movement in the reign of Henry VIII; Ridley and Cranmer dominate the study in the reign of Edward VI. The life of Latimer links Bilney with Cranmer and spans the whole period from the early days of conversion in the Halls of Cambridge right on to the triumphant martyrdoms in the fires of Oxford. The forty years, from 1516 to 1556, during which these men found and followed Jesus Christ were the years in which the English Reformation was cradled and nurtured for the glory of God.

The South African missionary, John Smith Moffat, once commented: ‘Many take religion as they take their bridge and tennis, when they have nothing more pressing to do. Religion ought to be a ruling passion.’ The young men in the following pages are eminent examples of what Christian passion means. . . Here some readers will have a first meeting with Brainerd, Martyn, M’Cheyne and Keith-Falconer. And for other readers, who have long revered these names, there will be the pleasure of meeting them again, as true to life as any book can make them. For us all there is the challenge to live with greater devotion to Christ. What follows in these pages aims to deepen what is a fundamental New Testament conviction, and it will surely help us to understand the prayer of Robert Murray M’Cheyne: ‘I long for love without any coldness, light without dimness, and purity without spot or wrinkle. I long to lie at Jesus’ feet, and tell Him I am all His, and ever will be.’ — IAIN H. MURRAY

Book Description

They Were Pilgrims is the story of four remarkable young men who shared a common spiritual aim and ideal. They were David Brainerd, Henry Martyn, Robert Murray M’Cheyne, and Ion Keith-Falconer. Their average life-span was only thirty years, but they left a spiritual impact on their generation which was altogether out of the ordinary.

Their lives covered the period of history from 1718 to 1887. A clear line of spiritual descent can be traced from David Brainerd to Henry Martyn, from Brainerd and Martyn to Robert Murray M’Cheyne, and from Martyn to Ion Keith-Falconer. They were all linked to the missionary movement which had its birth in the great spiritual awakening of the eighteenth century.

They were pioneers in this movement: Brainerd with the Native North Americans, M’Cheyne with the Jews of Palestine and Central Europe, Martyn and Keith-Falconer in the Muslim world of Persia and Arabia. Their contribution to missionary work would be enough in itself to invest their lives with outstanding interest. But the greatest single feature in their lives was their unqualified self-surrender to the claims of God.

This book tries to pull up the blinds so that readers can see through the window and can trace the inner spiritual development of these exemplary Christians. It is the freshness and clarity of this record of personal devotion which makes the story of their pilgrimage so relevant for the whole-hearted disciple of Christ today.
