Set Description

This set comprises the 8 volumes of Martyn Lloyd-Jones’s expositions of the book of Ephesians in a newly re-typeset edition.

Background

When a spiritual history of the 20th century comes to be written it will be bound to include mention not only of the far-reaching influence of Dr Lloyd-Jones’ ministry at Westminster Chapel, London (1938–1968), but of the remarkable fact that subsequently the published volumes of his New Testament expository sermons have had a circulation unprecedented for such material during the last century.

At a time of general doubt as to the relevance and appeal of preaching, the author has shown that, when the message of Scripture is taught with Spirit-given authority, and in popular form, it retains its power over the heart and mind and conscience. The help which thousands have experienced from the sermons already published is, in the first instance, due to this fact.

It was the sermons on this first chapter of Ephesians, commenced at Westminster on Sunday mornings in the autumn of 1954, that proved to be the start of the author’s prolonged treatment of various New Testament books. By that date Dr Lloyd-Jones had been more than 25 years in the ministry and his convictions on how Scripture should be taught were fully matured. The sermons on Ephesians were, therefore, in a sense a new point of departure. The series on the Epistle to the Romans was to follow in 1955.

Book Description

The fourteen sermons contained in Saved By Grace Alone were preached in Westminster Chapel, London, on Sunday evenings between 15 April and 15 July 1956. They are a fine example of preaching evangelistically from a consecutive passage of the Old Testament. While they are firmly based on the meaning of the Scripture text in its original setting, they are not overloaded with historical or exegetical detail. The larger themes of Ezekiel’s message to the people of his own day are kept prominently in view.

Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones was a preacher who focused on the unchanging, recurring needs of human beings and the everlasting good news of God’s grace.

He dealt plainly with the reality of sin as disobedience to God’s law, but he also exulted in the tenderness and abundance of God’s salvation through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the incarnate Son of God. It was his emphasis on this crucially important gospel truth—that we are ‘saved by grace alone’— which made his preaching, and these sermons on Ezekiel 36, truly timeless.

Book Description

It is the duty of all Christians to remember those faithful men from whom they heard the gospel of Christ. For those of Scottish descent no Christian leader deserves more to be remembered than John Knox. Born in Haddington around 1514, he took his stand for the Reformation alongside that ‘blessed martyr of Christ’, George Wishart. Assured of God’s call to the ministry of the Word while at St. Andrews, Knox endured many hardships in bringing the gospel’s message to a people in great spiritual darkness. Under God’s blessing he was instrumental in transforming the nation and his stamp, though somewhat faded, still bears its impress upon the Scottish people, both at home and abroad.

Commemorating the 500th anniversary of the birth of John Knox, this little book will encourage readers to not only remember the man but also consider the outcome of his life and imitate his faith.

Note: There are 3 chapters in this book, all of which have been previously published in other Banner titles. If you already own The Puritans, Knowing the Times, and Scottish Christian Heritage, then you already have access to the chapters in this book.

Book Description

When the light of the gospel enters the soul it brings with it a supernatural power that radically transforms the whole of life. This change is perhaps nowhere more clearly seen than in the relationships between husbands and wives, parents and children. Our age has witnessed an almost total collapse of the family unit, and in many places the majority of children are now being raised in ‘broken homes’. Our society presents Christian parents and children with a unique opportunity of bearing witness of God’s love by just being different. Few things are more powerful than a Christian family in which the true relationship between parents and children is clearly seen. This may be one of the ways in which God will bring many to a knowledge of the truth.

Book Description

After many years of leadership in the work of the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students. Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones became deeply concerned with what he believed to be subtle but real shifts in commitment to the biblical gospel. His three addresses at the IFES Conference in 1971 drew attention to this. In them he indicated the reasons for his misgivings, gave an exposition of the true nature of evangelicalism and re-emphasised the foundation stones on which it was built.

These addresses lay unpublished for almost three decades. Today, thirty years later, much of what Dr. Lloyd-Jones emphasised then reads like a prophecy of the future direction evangelicals would take during the years that followed. His comments are as trenchantly relevant for the twenty-first century as they were for the 1970’s. If anything, his message is all the more urgent.

This material is extracted from ‘Knowing the Times‘, a selection of addresses by Dr. Lloyd-Jones during the years 1942-1977, also published by the Banner of Truth Trust.

In Ephesians 3 we have both the Apostle Paul’s profoundest teaching and, at the same time, possibly the most experimental chapter in all his Epistles. Certainly the fervour of his great pastoral spirit is nowhere more evident. The record he here gives us of his own calling to preach Christ, and of his fervent prayers for these Ephesian Christians, leads to one of the sublimest and most moving statements that he ever wrote.

The intrinsic value of Ephesians 3 demands attention at all time, but it is particularly relevant to the condition of the Church today when a stronger experimental emphasis is urgently needed. Not for the first time in Christian history there are teachings abroad which dislike any emphasis upon experience. Sometimes these teachings appear in the form of an emphasis on “faith” only. Sometimes it is argued that, because of the assertion of Ephesians 1:3, Christians have no need to seek any further blessing. This third chapter of Ephesians gives us a direct answer to such teaching for Paul prays that these Ephesians, who had already believed and received so much, should receive so much more “even to being filled with” all the fullness of God.

With the Puritans we must distinguish between believing in what is possible for the Christian, and the appropriating of that possibility. Any teaching which fears a greater experience of the love of God can never deal with the greatest trouble in the Church today, namely our lack of spirituality and of a true knowledge of God.

We can never know too much concerning the great doctrines of the Faith, but if that knowledge does not lead to an ever deeper experience of the love of Christ, it departs seriously from the apostolic pattern. We are to ‘grow in grace and in the knowledge of the Lord’.

This volume is the third in a series of eight volumes.

Book Description

In his first sermon in his series on the opening chapters of the Gospel of John, begun in October 1962, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones made the arresting remark: ‘Do you know what is the matter with us? I will tell you. We, none of us, really believe in the Lord Jesus Christ! The trouble with all of us is that we do not know enough about him. So John says: The thing you need above everything is to be brought to this knowledge of him — who he is, what he has done, and what he has made possible for us.’

The preacher was convinced that Christians are too often unhappy and uncertain — and, as a result, fail to give a true and accurate impression of Christianity to those around them — because they are suffering from ignorance. Yet he insisted strongly that bare knowledge is not enough. What is needed is the life that comes from believing in Christ rightly (John 20:31). ‘We must start with the doctrine, and out of that will come the life, the experience, everything we need.’

This is part of the last great Lloyd-Jones Sunday-morning series at Westminster Chapel. In these 32 powerful sermons, he concentrates on two main areas which feature prominently in John chapter 1: law and grace and their respective roles (from verse 17); and the assurance of salvation (from verses 12-13). The central focus in all the sermons is the life that flows from the Lord Jesus Christ, received by faith, the life that characterizes those who are ‘born of God’ — those who are God’s children by faith in his beloved Son.

Book Description

Why did Christ die? What is the meaning of the cross? Most theories of the atonement are concerned only with its manward aspect but as Dr Lloyd-Jones demonstrates in this exposition of Romans 3.25-26 the cross was above everything else a vindication of the character of God. ‘This is an essential part of the glorious Gospel. One Calvary God was making a way of salvation so that you and I might be forgiven. But he had to do so in a way that you and I might be forgiven. But he had to do so in a way that will leave his character inviolate, that will leave his eternal consistency still absolute and unbroken. Once you begin to look at it like that, you see that this is the most tremendous, the most glorious, the most staggering thing in the universe and in the whole of history.’ This exposition is taken from the third volume of Dr Lloyd-Jones’ series on the Epistle of the Romans.

Book Description

No New Testament Epistle is more foundational to the Christian faith than Romans, and no chapter in Romans more basic than its first chapter. To few chapters did Dr. Lloyd-Jones give more thought or more emphasis. He viewed it as the supreme demonstration of the necessity for the gospel, the announcement of divine truths worthy of the attention of the whole world.

ENDORSEMENT

‘Every young preacher needs to get and study this book. It contains the wealth of wisdom common among elderly men, especially spiritual men — the kind of book that comes along only once every so often. Don’t miss it!’ — THE BIBLICAL EVANGELIST

Book Description

Martyn Lloyd-Jones’s biblically informed insight gave a certain prophetic quality to his ministry; not in the sense that he foretold the future, but rather in his God-given ability to put his finger on the essential issues, and to apply the burden of God’s Word. Knowing the Times brings together a number of addresses which exhibit this vibrant prophetic character. Those who heard Dr. Lloyd-Jones speak in a variety of contexts will easily recall the kind of impact which accompanied addresses like these. All will agree that Knowing the Times is one of the most significant Lloyd-Jones titles ever published. The addresses reprinted here remain ‘tracts for the times’. The publishers believe that they have the potential to be used in the preparation of another generation who will be like the children of Issachar referred to in 1 Chronicles 12:32: ‘Men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do.’

Book Description

Dr. Lloyd-Jones spent the greater part of the turbulent twentieth century in preaching the Word of God. The convictions with which he began his ministry remained with him, and in all this time the message was the same. He preached on the words, ‘For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified’ at the commencement of his ministry in 1926, and again, from the same pulpit, in February 1977. So the sermon contained in this booklet is a historic statement. But it is more. It is a persuasive presentation of the unchanging gospel which has brought salvation to people all over the world throughout the two millennia now ended, and which remains just as vitally relevant as the new millennium begins to unfold.

Book Description

Iain H. Murray’s two volume record of the life of David Martyn Lloyd-Jones is one of the great Christian biographies of the twentieth century. It tells the remarkable story of an outstanding young physician’s call to the Christian ministry and the widespread lasting influence of his preaching and spiritual leadership, first in his native Wales and thereafter in London and throughout the world.

But a man’s letters tell the story of his pilgrimage from within, and here, in over one hundred of his personal letters, we encounter Martyn Lloyd-Jones first hand. Although he thought of himself as a ‘poor correspondent’, these pages tell a different story, unselfconsciously displaying the tender forcefulness of a personality which left an indelible impression on those who knew him personally.

Here we catch a glimpse of the rounded and balanced picture of the man: the physician and the preacher, the student of deep theology who was fascinated by agricultural life; the lover of books who cared about people; the ardent Welshman who devoted his years to Christian service in England and beyond.

In this attractive and fascinating volume, Iain Murray divides the correspondence in a way which gives insight into the different areas of Lloyd-Jones’ life (family, church, colleagues in the Christian service) but at the same time retains chronological sequence and development. Perfectly complementing the biography, The Letters of D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones reveals the heartbeat of his life: ‘Not what we have been, not what we have done, but the grace of God in Jesus Christ our Lord’.

Book Description

This is the first of a series of volumes which bring together Dr Lloyd-Jones’ preaching from the Acts of the Apostles. It covers texts from the first three chapters in the book which, he claimed, presented ‘authentic Christianity and nothing else.’

The Doctor was aware of how much people need ‘to know exactly what Christianity is and what the Christian church is.’ Just as many in the first century AD looked towards Jerusalem or Rome for answers to life’s problems, so people in our own time also look in the wrong direction and need to be directed to the only source of real help.

The message of Christianity is ‘Jesus and the resurrection’. The church in the Acts of the Apostles was prepared to live for this and die in it. Dr Lloyd-Jones constantly directs the reader to the same Saviour and the same life.

Book Description

In these sermons we see that the truths expressed by the Apostle Paul are not only a fitting conclusion to Romans 9-11, and indeed to the preceding chapters as well, but are also an interpretative key to the past and the future. They explain the history of Israel in the Old Testament and that of the Jews and the church in the New, while also anticipating the future of the Jewish people in the Christian church.

  Three 15
The second argument – the existence of a remnant – the example of Elijah and lessons – the election of grace – the battle not ours but God’s – numbers not decisive – God’s purposes sure.
  Four 26
Israel’s earnest seeking after God – judicial blindness – scriptural precedents blessings turned to curses – reasons for this – a wrong seeking after righteousness.
  Five 35
What is meant by judicial blindness or hardening – how it is accomplished – the example of Pharaoh -lessons for today – revival.

The salvation of Israel- Paul’s prophecy confirmed by Scripture – wording of Old Testament statements varied by inspiration – the Deliverer out of Zion God’s covenant with Israel.
  Twenty-three 195
In what sense Israel are enemies – in what sense beloved – God’s gifts and calling never regretted – confirmation of interpretation of ‘all Israel’.
  Twenty-four 204
God frowns on, yet loves, His people – disobedience of Gentiles and Jews – God’s mercy to both – shut up in unbelief- ‘mercy upon all’ not universalism.
  Twenty-five 213
God’s way of showing mercy – God not the author of sin, but uses it for His glory – shut up to mercy – ‘all Israel’ cannot mean the elect, nor elect Jews only.
  Twenty-six 224
The true Israel not always a remnant – prophecy not history written in advance – danger of reading in what is not there – Paul not dealing with the Second Coming.
  Twenty-seven 236
How the prophecy will be fufilled not revealed – Paul’s philosophy of history – everything under the hand of God – salvation entirely of God – no case hopeless, nor beyond God’s power.
  Twenty-eight 250

  Twenty-nine 262
God’s ways incomprehensible – division between evangelical and non-evangelical views – proclamation, not dialogue – examples of God’s judgments and ways – cause of hope and joy.
  Thirty 279
Salvation independent of man – man’s ignorance of God and himself – he has nothing to give and no claim on God – The Creator and Sustainer of all things – all things for His glory – do we rejoice in this?

Book Description

‘I have not heard such preaching for years. . .I wish every minister of the Lord in America could have heard the sermons I have heard from this anointed servant of the Lord.’ So wrote Dr. Wilbur M. Smith of Fuller Theological Seminary, in Moody Monthly, after hearing Martyn Lloyd-Jones preach an evangelistic sermon from the Old Testament. In this volume a major selection of such sermons is now published for the first time, and the reasons for Wilbur Smith’s enthusiasm will become clear. For while much of Dr. Lloyd-Jones’ published expositions are designed to help those who are already Christians, he regarded himself, first of all, as an evangelist. Recognizing that no-one is a Christian by nature, he saw that the primary calling of the church lay in presenting the message of the gospel to the non-believer, the unconcerned and the sceptic.

The question of how to preach the gospel effectively today is difficult for many to answer; that it can be done from the Old Testament is frequently doubted. The importance of this volume lies in the way it illustrates the answer to these difficulties. Its pages are alive with the power of the gospel expressed in sermons which unintentionally provide models to encourage similar biblically relevant and powerful preaching.

Called from his background of medicine and science, Lloyd-Jones, first in South Wales, then in the heart of London, exercised an enormously influential ministry. He consistently sounded the notes of the folly of faith in man with all his moral failure, and of the glory of the gospel of Christ in whom alone salvation and hope are to be found. Again and again these sermons demonstrate that the Christian faith is not merely another religion among many; it alone has the message which can bring us to the knowledge of God and make this life the way to heaven.

Book Description

This is the second in a series of volumes which bring together much of Dr Lloyd-Jones evangelistic preaching from the Acts of the Apostles. It covers texts from chapters 4 and 5 in the book which, he claimed, presented ‘authentic Christianity and nothing else.’

The first volume in the series was enthusiastically received. The following comment is representative:

The aim of the book is to bring us back to the basics of the Christian faith. The style is crystal clear. The content is thoroughly evangelistic. The glory of the gospel shines on every page. I thoroughly commend it; truly Dr Lloyd-Jones at his best — ‘He though dead yet speaketh’. We eagerly await the other volumes.

The present volume takes up the defence of Peter and John before the council in Acts 4, the prayer of the church in the same chapter, the view of the life of the church seen at the end of the chapter, and the deceit of Ananias and Sapphira in chapter 5, powerfully applying the lessons of these passages to the mind, heart, and conscience of the reader.

Book Description

What did the Puritans and their successors teach? Was their teaching biblical? What can we learn from them for our life and witness today? These questions guided Dr. Lloyd-Jones in giving the addresses in this volume. Far from sharing the idea that a knowledge of the past is useless or irrelevant, he believed that the study of history is vital to the well-being of the church today.

In these addresses given at the Puritan Studies and Westminster Conferences between 1959 and 1978, Dr. Lloyd-Jones ranges widely over the history of Reformed Christianity from the Reformation to the nineteenth century, drawing lessons from major figures like Calvin and Knox, Bunyan and Owen, Edwards and Whitefield, and from lesser-known men such as Henry Jacob, John Glas and Robert Sandeman.

Written in an absorbing and stimulating style, these studies continue to speak with great insight and relevance to the church of the twenty-first century.

Book Description

Why should a modern reader consider the early chapters of Acts of the Apostles? In order, says Dr. Lloyd-Jones, ‘to discover what the Christian church is, what her message is, and what she is meant to do in this world’.

In this volume, the third in the present series which brings together much of Dr Lloyd-Jones’ evangelistic preaching on Acts, the main incidents in Acts 5:17-6:8 are reviewed and their lessons applied to the mind, heart and conscience of the reader. The arrest and miraculous release of the apostles, their preaching before the council, the advice of Gamaliel, the implications of the problem described in Acts 6:1, and the emergence and testimony of Stephen are considered in turn. Dr Lloyd-Jones’ burning desire throughout is that his hearers and readers should know ‘the glory and power of the Lord, as he was preached by the early church’.

Book Description

When Dr. Lloyd-Jones preached these twenty-five sermons on 2 Peter (October 1946-1947) comparatively few saw their far-reaching significance. The minister of Westminster Chapel, London, was proposing to rebuild a congregation on lines strangely unfamiliar in post-war Britain. The sermons’ form- authoritative, expository preaching — and, still more, their content, were against all the prevailing trends. J. I. Packer, one of his younger hearers in the late 1940s, has written: ‘I had never heard such preaching and was electrified. All that I know about preaching, I can honestly say, I learned from “the Doctor”. I have never heard another preacher with so much of God about him’.

The content of this volume is its chief warrant for publication. But as a record of Dr. Lloyd-Jones’ first extensive series of sermons on any one book of Scripture it also has some special interest. With treatment which is broader and less detailed than normal (intentionally he does not deal with every verse) his hearers were introduced to expository preaching. Now, in this format, his 2 Peter sermons will provide an introduction for others to a type of reading which is able, under God, to strengthen Christians and churches around the world.

Book Description

Why should readers in the twenty-first century concern themselves with preaching from the first century? Are there not many more pressing topics to concern them than a long address given by a Jewish Christian to the leaders of his nation in Jerusalem? Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones was convinced that time spent in the early chapters of Acts, ‘to discover how the church started and what her message was at the beginning’, was well spent.

He shows that we cannot understand the gospel, or even our own history, without understanding the events narrated in Acts 7. There would be no gospel if ‘the God of glory’ had not ‘appeared to Abraham’. These stirring sermons confront the reader with the mighty purpose of God as it unfolded in Old Testament history, and particularly with the central focus and fulfilment of it all, Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of God.

Authentic Christianity, Volume 4 consists of twenty evangelistic sermons preached in Westminster Chapel on Sunday evenings between October 1966 and February 1967. In them all, Dr Lloyd-Jones directs his hearers away from the bankruptcy and confusion of modern thought to the only source of hope for his or any generation, the unchanging ‘gospel of God, concerning His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord’.

Book Description

All Christians have been made free by Christ (John 8:36), but not all have an equally strong grasp of what this means in practice. Some are weakened by scruples about things which are strictly neither right nor wrong, while others assert their liberty in a way which risks doing violence to the consciences of the weak. It was this situation which the Apostle Paul addressed in Romans 14. He insisted that, while Christian liberty was to be maintained, it was never to be asserted in such a way as to hurt the consciences of others, or to embolden them to do what they believed to be wrong.

In this the last volume of the series, Dr Lloyd-Jones explains the implications of this issue for the church today. The fitting conclusion of his exposition of Romans is that true Christianity is not, in the end, concerned with such matters as what may be eaten or what days should be observed, but with a divine kingdom, characterized by inward righteousness, peace and joy.

Book Description

It was said of Martyn Lloyd-Jones that while others preached love, or even preached Christ, Lloyd-Jones PREACHED GOD. These mighty sermons from Isaiah chapter 40 bear this out, and in this they meet one of our greatest needs today — to know our God as he really is. They show that the God of the Bible is not only the great Creator and Judge but the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort who meets us at the point of our deepest need. This all-sufficient God has already met and answered all our problems, doubts and difficulties, in the gospel of his Son, Jesus Christ.

Those hungering to know God–or to know him better–will find great help here, while those who have already tasted the rich gospel provision in earlier Lloyd-Jones titles on Old Testament themes such as God’s Way Not Ours (on Isaiah 1) and Old Testament Evangelistic Sermons –– will need little urging to return for more!

Book Description

D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones was convinced that Acts 7 is not only one of the great chapters of the Bible but one that is vital to a right understanding of what it means to be a Christian.

One of the reasons why today’s church has lost its power is because it has become so much like the world. Tragically the world has entered the church and there has been a lowering of all the standards. Behind all this is the foolish notion that Christians can win people by being like them. Yet the world remains unchanged and the church is considered an irrelevance.

But the striking feature of Acts 7 is the amazing contrast between Stephen and those who opposed him. Here is a Christian who is so different from the world — so Christlike, so uncompromising, so faithful (even unto death), yet so full of power and of the Holy Spirit that the impact of his witness on the world is still being felt 2,000 years later!

Authentic Christianity, Volume 5 consists of eighteen evangelistic sermons preached in Westminster Chapel on Sunday evenings between March and July 1967. In them all, Dr Lloyd-Jones directs his hearers away from the bankruptcy and confusion of modern thought to the only source of hope for his or any generation, the unchanging ‘gospel of God, concerning his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord’.

Book Description

All over the world in the most diverse situations are to be found Christian men and women who owe an incalculable debt to the ministry of Dr. D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones who for thirty years was the minister of Westminster Chapel, London. His longest series of expositions was this 14 volume set of Romans, the greatest of New Testament Epistles. Just as Lloyd-Jones’ public ministry stood out as widely different from contemporary preaching, so his Romans came into bookshops with an appeal that took many by surprise. Not a few thought that the nature of his pulpit ministry would inhibit its continuance on paper — ‘He needed to be heard, not read.’ But those of that opinion were mistaking where his real strength lay. First of all, it lay in the truth he was speaking, not in its delivery. Further, his whole view of preaching meant that he addressed himself to the heart and conscience, as well as to the mind, and sermonic material of that kind has never failed to hold readers as well as hearers. Time was to prove that his message would reach far larger numbers by his books than had ever been possible even in his widespread ministry. The books would also go into any languages and his Romans would be read by thousands, in nations from Brazil to Korea.

Book Description

The very concept of ‘truth’ has been questioned in recent times. Is the notion of ‘your truth’ valid, or is there such a thing as the truth—an ultimate truth that is the same for every person in every place?

Is it up to individuals to decide what is true for them, or is there a higher authority that defines truth? Are all religious or philosophical insights valid, or is there a final authority in matters of belief?

These are questions which Martyn Lloyd-Jones addresses under the theme of authority—the authority of Jesus Christ; the authority of the Scriptures; and the authority of the Holy Spirit.

First published in 1958, Authority remains a foundational biblical treatment of an enduringly important theme.

Book Description

In this concluding volume of Authentic Christianity, Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones shows the significance of the events recorded in Acts 8:1-35 for readers today. These sermons, preached between Oct. 1967 and Feb. 1968, are full of penetrating insights on such topics as man’s need for the gospel, the work of the Spirit, the supernatural character of true Christianity, repentance and faith, the danger of spurious belief, and the very heart and centre of the gospel in the sufferings and death of Christ, as explained by Philip to the man of Ethiopia.

The series on Acts was cut short by Dr Lloyd-Jones’ illness and consequent retirement as minister of Westminster Chapel. These concluding sermons therefore gain an added poignancy from the fact that the Doctor felt increasingly unwell. However, as he ministered God’s Word he was clearly supported by his own experience of the power of the truths he commended so passionately to others.

Book Description

Diagnosis was a life-long interest of D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones. Nowhere is this more evident than in his treatment of Romans chapter two. Here he unfolds Paul’s analysis of the spiritual sickness of the human heart, its deceitfulness and rebellion against God, and its sinister use of religion as a defence-mechanism against true conviction of sin.

Book Description

Christian unity is the result of a shared faith in Christ and His gospel. This is what emerges from Dr. Lloyd-Jones’ consideration of John 17 and Ephesians 4 in the addresses to the Westminster Fellowship republished here. His presentation was given against the background of the ferment of discussion and debate engendered by the ecumenical movement of the time and demonstrated that unity is never something arrived at by ignoring or minimizing truth. The debates have moved on, but this lucid examination of the issues underlying Christian unity remains as relevant as when first presented in 1962. It points to timeless truths which should never be obscured.

Book Description

It is certain that no subject has been more frequently dealt with in sermons, books, lectures, pamphlets and articles during the present century than the question of ‘Christian Unity’. It is equally true to say that no subject has caused so much confusion in the minds and hearts of members of churches.

Were it merely a matter of organisation, it would not be so serious; but as the exposition of this key passage in Ephesians 4:1-16 shows, it involves vital doctrines. The trouble generally arises because the advocates of what is known as the ecumenical movement are content to make vague general statements ‘often sentimental’ or to emphasise one part of a statement instead of the whole. For instance, in verse 15, love is emphasised exclusively at the expense of truth.

We all tend to be the creatures of prejudices, and it therefore behoves us to examine ourselves and our views in the light of this crucial passage. That there have been sinful divisions in the past is painfully obvious; but the answer is not to be found in an amalgamation of organisations based on minimal truth. The greatest tragedy in the world today is not, as is so frequently asserted a divided church, but the fact that the majority seem to place unity above truth, and that many who are genuinely interested in truth are governed in their practice by traditions.

‘I can but pray that this study will be blessed by God to help many perplexed and confused Christians.’
— D. M. Lloyd-Jones

In this volume the preacher moves step by step through the massive reasoning of the Apostle Paul on atonement and justification, yet the detail of the exposition does not stand in the way of a clear view of the whole, and the reader is constantly shown how every section fits in the theme of God’s complete plan of salvation.

Book Description

In an age which has seen an almost total collapse of marriage and when, in many cases, marriages end in divorce with children being raised in ‘broken homes’, Dr. Lloyd-Jones’ words speak powerfully into our present situation. It is a situation which may be seen as giving Christians, and especially Christian marriages, a valuable opportunity to bear witness to biblical truth. The way in which Dr. Lloyd-Jones, like the Apostle Paul, deals with marriage relationship, is extremely important — to attempt to deal with Christian practice apart from Christian doctrine is to tread a dangerous path. As these chapters on Ephesians make clear, the only Christianity powerful enough to penetrate and change society is that which is derived from the work of the Spirit of God.

Book Description

It is a striking fact that in Paul’s writings great doctrinal exposition always leads to clear, demanding and practical calls to personal holiness and growth in Christian wisdom and character. Nowhere is this more clearly illustrated than in Ephesians 4:17-5:17. Yet it is precisely at this point that so many Christians fall short of the balance of Scripture — either by emphasising doctrine without spelling out its implications for practical Christian living or vice versa. It is here that Dr Lloyd-Jones was regarded as a master, perhaps without parallel in the Twentieth century. Darkness and Light demonstrates why this preaching was so greatly appreciated for its faithfulness to apostolic doctrine and practice. Magnificent exposition, it is also a handbook to living the Christian life.

Book Description

Dr. Lloyd-Jones saw Romans 5 as a central chapter in the entire letter. Here is Paul’s exposition of the blessings of justification by faith; but here too, the cosmic roots of our salvation are traced back to Christ.

Book Description

Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones is most often remembered as the preacher of Westminster Chapel, London. But his ministry began far from the metropolis, in the industrial setting of Aberavon, South Wales. It was during this time that the sermons in this book were preached, and they show that from the outset of his ministry, Dr. Lloyd-Jones was an evangelistic preacher.

Dr. Lloyd-Jones was filled with concern that no one should mistake, as he had done in his younger days, nominal Christianity for the real experience of salvation. The sermons reveal great insight into the plight of humanity, and a compassion for the unconverted. They are reproduced here as examples of what gospel preaching ought to be, and in the conviction that they will speak again to the hearts and consciences of new generations.

Book Description

God’s Ultimate Purpose, while possessing the same general characteristics as the volumes already issued, is likely to attract particular attention. For one thing, it was the sermons on this first chapter of Ephesians, commenced at Westminster on Sunday mornings in the autumn of 1954, that proved to be the start of the author’s prolonged treatment of various New Testament books. By that date Dr Lloyd-Jones had been more than 25 years in the ministry and his convictions on how Scripture should be taught were fully matured. The sermons on Ephesians were, therefore, in a sense a new point of departure. The series on the Epistle to the Romans was to follow in 1955.

But quite apart from its significance in Dr Lloyd-Jones’ ministry, Ephesians Chapter 1 will always be of major importance in any consideration of the New Testament. As the author writes in his Preface: ‘The Epistle to the Ephesians is the most “mystical” of Paul’s epistles, and nowhere does his inspired mind soar to greater heights. There is no greater privilege in life than to be called to expound what Thomas Carlyle called such “infinities and immensities.”’

This volume is the first in a series of eight volumes.
