Book Description

This booklet tells the true stories of nine priests who have made the discovery that the way to God is now open. When Jesus Christ died on the cross, the ceremonial curtain in the nearby temple, which symbolically separated the people from God, was torn in two from top to bottom. Now all people can have access to God by grace alone, through faith alone, and in Christ alone. The priests who share their stories in these pages all came to understand this for themselves — and so too can you!

Book Description

Written by faculty and friends of Old Princeton, with an introduction by Sinclair B. Ferguson.

The authors included in this small clothbound collection:

William S. Plumer (1802-80)
J. W. Alexander (1804-59)
Archibald Alexander (1771-1851)
Charles Hodge (1797-78)
Samuel Miller (1769-1850)
Ashbel Green (1762-1848)
Nicholas Murray (1802-61)

The authors of The Pastor: His Call, Character, and Work were all men closely associated, either as students, professors, or in one case a director, with Princeton Theological Seminary, which was established in 1812 by the Presbyterian Church of the United States of America. It was founded as a ‘nursery of vital piety as well as of sound theological learning…to train up persons for the ministry who shall be lovers as well as defenders of the truth as it is in Jesus, friends of revivals of religion, and a blessing to the church of God.’

A sample of the Princeton view of the ministry is contained in this little volume. Taken together its chapters form a small instruction manual on the key elements in the work of a minister of the gospel in any age and place.

These pages combine theological acumen, a high sense of purpose, a vision of the privileges of serving Christ, and a recalibration of our whole vision for ministry.

The chapters in this book have been selected from the two-volume Princeton and the Work of the Christian Ministry, also published by the Banner of Truth.

‘These are the books to return to again and again as old friends. They are also a sacred trust, to pass on to our families, and to recommend to friends. For in these books we have been given light on our path, instruction for our minds, wisdom for our lives, pleasures for our spirit.’ — SINCLAIR B. FERGUSON

Book Description

‘Friends have told me that they have discovered books written by some of the Puritans that have been a tremendous help to them! Could you recommend a few classics to me?’

Many Christians ask that question today. Nor are we the first to feel we need someone to guide us. Already in the Puritan period Richard Baxter saw that need — and drew up lists adjusted to finances available. But even his list for the poorest contained around one hundred authors! The Puritan Classics Box Set is more modest in size, certainly, but it presents a single package of attractively produced hardbound editions of some of the most helpful works written in the seventeenth century. All of them came from the ministries of men who were marked by God-centredness, faithfulness to Scripture, and a devotion to pointing people to Christ and maturing them in the faith.

The authors represented here span the years between 1558 (when William Perkins was born) and 1691 (when both Richard Baxter and John Flavel died) — in terms of English history, form the accession of Queen Elizabeth I in 1558 until just after the ‘Glorious Revolution’ of 1688. The all served in pastoral ministry and shared a profound knowledge of Scripture, and had an enviable ability to apply it to the congregations they loved and served.

Here are treasures beyond price that, through the wise investment of our reading and meditation, can make us rich beyond measure. Those who own this box set possess treasure indeed!

This 10 volume box set includes the following 15 titles:

The Art of Prophesying — William Perkins
The Bruised Reed — Richard Sibbes
The Letters of Samuel Rutherford — Samuel Rutherford

Precious Remedies Against Satan’s Devices — Thomas Brooks

The 1950s saw a change of direction for numbers within evangelicalism in England. It was a return to a more doctrinal Christianity, prompted in part by a rediscovery of the Reformers and Puritans and by the contemporary witness of such men as D.M. Lloyd-Jones and J.I. Packer. Amid this change, a little magazine, first published in Oxford in 1955, worked as a catalyst and became by 1958 as publishing house reaching some forty nations.

Blemishes and weaknesses the magazine certainly had, but the call for God-centred Christianity, and for a gospel certain that all is of grace, was widely received.

Without editing, the issues from September 1955 to August 1959 are here reprinted. This volume is not so much an historical document as a challenge for a reformation and revival that is no less urgent today.

Book Description

Have you ever wondered what influences have shaped the preachers, teachers and authors you respect? You Must Read brings together more than thirty well-known Christian leaders and gives them the opportunity to talk about a book that has made a lasting impact on their lives. Their personal narratives and recommendations of the literature that has moulded and matured them combine to produce a book full of interest from start to finish, but also one that can be ‘dipped into’ for occasional reading. Best of all, You Must Read will be an indispensable guide to some of the truly great books that have transformed, encouraged, instructed and challenged countless Christians’ lives. You Must Read is a ‘must read’ in itself, and a marvelous stimulus to read more.

You Must Read is an ambiguous title. As Christians ‘we are what we read’. God’s word is the instrument by which the Holy Spirit renews our minds and transforms our lives. The same is true, to a lesser extent, of Christian literature. The biographies of Christians whose lives have left a permanent mark on the church often disclose the influence of a particular book, or books, they themselves have read. So, You Must Read is a perennial maxim. You really must read!

But we also use these words when we are enthusiastic about a good book. We instinctively ask our friends, ‘Have you read …?’ And if the answer is ‘no’ we tend to say ‘Oh, you must read …’

But where do you begin? There are so many books from which to choose. Many of us want to ask, ‘Can somebody please tell me what books I should read?’ You Must Read provides some answers from the pens of a number of well-known Christian leaders, including Joel R. Beeke, Alistair Begg, Jerry Bridges, Mark Dever, J. Ligon Duncan, R. Albert Mohler, Jr., John MacArthur, Stuart Olyott, R. C. Sproul , Derek W. H. Thomas, Geoffrey Thomas, and many others.

Book Description

In the early 1560s Frederick III (1516-76), Elector Palatine desired that his subjects be led to a ‘devout knowledge and fear of the Almighty and his holy Word of salvation’. He commissioned a group of theologians and ministers to compose a catechetical summary of biblical truth that could be committed to memory and be an encouragement to personal faith and growth in Christ. The final version was approved by the Synod in Heidelberg (1563), the city lending its name to the catechism.

The Heidelberg Catechism follows the pattern of the Epistle to the Romans. It opens with the question ‘What is your only comfort in life and in death?’, and then examines the realities of human sin and misery (Rom. 1-3:20); salvation in Christ, including faith and repentance (Rom. 3:21-11:36); and the Christian life of thankful obedience in response to God’s grace in Christ (Rom. 12-16). The catechism stands as a faithful testimony to the ancient Christian faith in its scripturally derived shape and content, and further expressed in its exposition and application of the Apostles’ Creed, the sacraments of baptism and the Lord’s Supper, the Ten Commandments, and the Lord’s Prayer. — FROM THE FOREWORD BY WILLIAM VANDOODEWAARD

‘I cannot exaggerate the blessing that Banner of Truth has been to my life and the lives of my colleagues. Young people often ask me to share with them the books which have most shaped my theology and fanned into flame my zeal. The answer is always the same – Banner books and the Puritans. It is with the greatest urgency that I encourage every young Christian to read the Puritans, and the very best place to start is the Puritan Paperback Series from Banner of Truth.’– PAUL WASHER

‘I started reading the Puritan Paperbacks when I was in college. I’ve read around a dozen of them by now and have always found them edifying, convicting, and deeply spiritual. There are several—like Richard Baxter’s The Reformed Pastor and Thomas Brooks’ Precious Remedies Against Satan’s Devices—that I come back to often. You won’t find better physicians of the soul than the Puritans.’– – KEVIN DEYOUNG

‘When I was fifteen years old, I read my Dad’s entire shelf of Banner of Truth Puritan Paperbacks between 9:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. each evening as I sought for peace for my own soul. By God’s grace, the Puritan paperbacks granted me this peace in Christ in a large measure. I was so moved by the Banner paperbacks, that I started my first book company (Bible Truth Books) at the age of sixteen, as I wanted everyone to experience what I had experienced. I have been selling Puritan books ever since—nearly for fifty years now. I know of no set of books that can do people’s souls so much good as the Banner Puritan Paperbacks.’– JOEL BEEKE

‘The Puritans’ writings have shaped and influenced my life in Christ and ministry in incalculable ways; these godly men knew Christ, His Word, and how to effectively minister to God’s people. The Puritan Paperback Series is a great introduction to these men and their teaching. I find myself turning to them time and again in private devotion, discipleship, and deep study. An hour spent reading these works is an hour well-spent.’– JASON HELOPOULOS

‘Everybody wants to read the Puritans, but most people don’t know where to start. That’s simple! Start with the Puritan Paperback Series. Of course that only narrows it down to 48 volumes, so let me offer 3 top recommendations: The Mystery of Providence, The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment, and Precious Remedies Against Satan’s Devices. They may just change your life.’– TIM CHALLIES

‘Sibbes’ Bruised Reed, Goodwin’s Heart of Christ, Owen’s Mortification of Sin, and Flavel’s Mystery of Providence, are some just a few of the classics that are in this excellent Puritan Paperbacks Series. There is something for everyone in this series. My own Christian faith and learning would be seriously impoverished if I had not read some of these classic Puritan works.’– MARK JONES

‘The Puritans remain a goldmine of practical Christian wisdom but they do suffer in today’s marketplace for often being verbose and long-winded. The Puritan Paperback series offers some of the best Puritan writing in pocket sized volumes in a way that makes them attractively accessible. As Christians, we really do need to draw on the insights of the great leaders and thinkers of the Christian past and this series is one of the best ways for the hard-pressed and over-scheduled college student or twenty-something to do that. Inexpensive and easy to read, the Puritan Paperbacks are real bargains, practical, theological, doxological.’– CARL TRUEMAN

Book Description

This is the complete set of the currently available Puritan Paperbacks. A great gift for the willing reader, this set contains some of the greatest writings of the Puritans that have been read and enjoyed by Christians for centuries.

‘These sermons that Edmund Calamy put together, about the Great Ejection, 1662, are powerful sermons. These are pastors, choosing to be on the last day of their ministry, because they can’t in good conscience affirm everything in The Book of Common Prayer, who resign their jobs, lose their livings, generally had to move away from where they were to be faithful — these are their final sermons to their congregations — moving, moving sermons.’ — MARK DEVER

Book Description

A fine introduction to Puritan preaching, this little book also recalls one of the great turning points in English Christianity—for these sermons were preached on ‘the Farewell Sunday’ in August, 1662, when two thousand ministers left the national Church for conscience’ sake. Much has been written on that Great Ejection, but nothing is more important than to hear the ejected speak for themselves. Their watchword was:

I preach as never sure to preach again,
And as a dying man to dying men.

This new edition of Sermons of the Great Ejection not only commemorates the 350th anniversary of a noteworthy historical event but, more importantly, gives a real insight into the theology, godliness, and preaching of the Puritans. Why is this relevant? For two reasons: (i) as the blurb on the first edition said, ‘such preaching could set England alight again in our own times’; and (ii) the issues of 1662 are directly relevant to the present situation in the church when the emphasis is once again upon conformity and unity at the expense of truth and holiness. May this little book be an encouragement to men of gospel truth and integrity everywhere.

Book Description

There are few more thrilling periods of church history than the great missionary movement which stretched from the eighteenth into the nineteenth century. Recognizing that Jesus Christ was the missionary sent by the Father, and that the Bible is the Magna Carta of missions, men like Henry Martyn, John G. Paton, John Eliot, David Brainerd and William Chalmers Burns left home, family and love for the sake of Christ and to spread his good news. The narratives of their monumental labours and the sufferings and their strong longings to see Christ glorified in the salvation of the nations make awe-inspiring and God-honouring reading. Five Pioneer Missionaries tells the story of each of these servants of God. In doing so it not only outlines some of the great biblical principles of missions, but also challenges Christians today to live lives completely dedicated to serving Jesus Christ wherever he calls us to go.

‘The idea of ‘love’ and ‘rules’ being put side-by-side may seem strange in an age in which ‘Just do it!’ is the order of the day. But this fresh look at the Ten Commandments shows that it is only when we see God’s rules in light of his love that we can really make sense of how his laws are meant to function. The very fact the Bible itself sums up God’s Laws with, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength and mind, and your neighbour as yourself’, says it all. Our generation has grown up with a deep-seated suspicion of rules because of the myth that rules are the enemy of love. Here’s a book that shows nothing could be further from the truth.’– MARK JOHNSTON

‘I have often consulted Love Rules, a book which examines the Ten Commandments and their relevance for the church and the world today. It is an essential book on contemporary ethics, very useful not just for those about to preach a series on the whole Ten Commandments but in the ethical sections of the Sermon on the Mount or the closing chapters of Paul’s epistles opening up the morality that God requires and blesses in disciples of the Lord Jesus.’– GEOFF THOMAS

Book Description

Q. Why write a book on the law?
A. Because of the gospel.

When Jesus began his ministry the first sermon he preached issued the following command: ‘Repent and believe in the gospel’. But of what were people to repent? Is there a clear moral standard in the Bible that reveals the holiness of God, the sinfulness of man, and the purity of new life in Christ? Yes, there is.

The place of the moral law in relation to the gospel has become on of the most controversial issues for the evangelical church today. The end result is that less than 1% of church members can list the ten commandments. It is sadly true that some preach the law without the gospel. Some preach neither the law nor the gospel. However, no matter how hard one tries, one cannot genuinely preach the gospel without the law.

It is hoped that this small volume may be used to God in awakening zeal for his glory, encouraging faithful preaching, promoting wise living, and initiating true revival.

Book Description

As has so often happened in the history of God’s people, the persecution of gospel believers instigated by Mary Tudor (Queen of England from 1553 to 1558), helped to promote rather than hinder the spread of the gospel. One evidence of this is the Geneva Bible of 1560. A small band of English scholars, exiled in that city, produced a Bible version which, by its sheer excellence, was to drive its officially-approved rivals, the Great Bible and the Bishops’ Bible, from the field. Its forceful and vigorous language helped to make the Geneva Bible so popular that it eventually went through more than 150 editions and was still in widespread use in the middle of the following century. It was the Bible taken to America by the Mayflower Pilgrims, and its influence in spreading true biblical Christianity to the ends of the earth is incalculable.

The Banner of Truth Trust is marking the 450th anniversary of the first edition of the Geneva Bible by publishing this collection of introductions or prologues to the books of the Bible, together with the translators’ letter to Queen Elizabeth urging her to assist in building up the church in England and their letter to ‘our beloved in the Lord’, the Bible-reading Christians of the British Isles. The prologues present in a succinct and pithy way the ‘argument’ or theme of each book, giving the reader a rapid overview of the whole Bible, as seen through the eyes of the exiles. The book is sent out with the prayer that the prologues will help present-day readers to see the scope of each biblical book and taste the ‘riches of true knowledge and heavenly wisdom’ which the Geneva translators found there.

This is a magnificent two-volume set, calculated to stir the soul and to find a place of honour and affection in every Christian who loves to read the thrilling history of the Scottish church! – SINCLAIR B. FERGUSON

‘In these records we find a whole gallery of men and women whose lives and deaths speak to us of apostolic Christianity. Although not to be used as models in all things, the Scottish Puritans and Covenanters still exemplify the same kind of spiritual and missionary zeal that has ever been associated with the advance of the kingdom of God. Their lives were centred on the Word of God and prayer and they enjoyed real communion with Christ. They knew the Holy Spirit and believed in his power to change lives and nations. What Spurgeon once said of David Dickson’s Explanation of the Psalms we say of Scottish Puritans – Select Biographies, “We commend it with much fervour”.’ — IAIN H. MURRAY

Book Description

Scottish Puritans – Select Biographies constitute one of the great treasures of Scottish Christian literature. In quick succession, we meet such justly famous and revered figures as John Welsh, David Dickson, William Guthrie, and James Fraser of Brea, but also the lesser known and long forgotten, like the land-labourer of Carrick, John Stevenson. Here are the stories and reflections of men and women who, in times of great darkness, testing, and suffering, tasted what the author of Hebrews calls ‘the powers of the age to come’.

The 17th century was a dynamic period in Scottish church history, and yet many of its rich records lay hidden in privately owned manuscripts for two hundred years. It was only with the evangelical awakening of the 1840s that close attention was given to their publication, and a Society, formed for that purpose in Edinburgh, took the name of the historian, Robert Wodrow (1679-1734). On the 26 volumes thus published subsequent authors have depended heavily, and particularly so with respect to the two volumes originally entitled Select Biographies. In an era when Puritan literature is again being rediscovered their reprint is timely, providing as it does the opportunity to go back to first-hand sources. Here, for the most part, men and women live in their own words, or in the witness of their contemporaries. The 19th-century editor, William Tweedie, himself an evangelical leader, thought it worthwhile to be the editor of this rare material, and all who have possessed them endorse his judgment.

In these records we find a whole gallery of men and women whose lives and deaths speak to us of apostolic Christianity. Although not to be used as models in all things, the Scottish Puritans and Covenanters still exemplify the same kind of spiritual and missionary zeal that has ever been associated with the advance of the kingdom of God. Their lives were centered on the Word of God and prayer and they enjoyed real communion with Christ. They knew the Holy Spirit and believed in his power to change lives and nations. Prayers on the Psalms is a triple treasure to me. It was edited by my beloved mentor David B. Calhoun, who is truly a gift to the church, it is drawn from the great Scottish Psalter of 1595 and the translated French prayers of Huguenot pastor martyr Augustin Marlorat, and it is based on the Psalms God has given his church to sing and pray in joy and tears. Read it devotionally and pray it passionately.’ — LIGON DUNCAN

Book Description

The Scottish Psalter of 1595 was unique in that it contained a series of prayers on the Psalms. Regarded as ‘one of the little-known devotional treasures of the Scottish Church’ these prayers breathe the spirit of humble confidence in God in the midst of trouble and persecution. Presented here in slightly updated form as Prayers on the Psalms they are sure to suggest much matter for prayer in public, private, and family worship.

Below is an example of how one pastor, Ligon Duncan, uses the prayers for personal devotion:

ENDORSEMENT

‘We value every morsel about the Princeton worthies; may their influence long endure…The modern school think us fools, but certainly we were taught by wise men; and the proverb does not assert that walking with wise men produces folly. Finer minds than those of the Princeton tutors have seldom dwelt among the sons of men…Oh, for more Princeton theology, for it is the teaching of the Word of God.’– C.H. SPURGEON

Book Description

The new methods in evangelism aggressively promoted by Charles Grandison Finney and others in the United States in the 1830s and 40s were the logical outworking of the ‘New Divinity’, a theological system which embodied altered views of the fallen condition of man, of the kind of change brought about in regeneration, and of the possibility of attaining entire sanctification in the present life.

The main opponents of the New Divinity were the professors and teachers of Princeton Theological Seminary and College, including Archibald Alexander and Charles Hodge. During the 1830s and early 1840s they wrote extensively on the subject in the Biblical Repertory and Theological Review (later known as the Princeton Review). Some of the most significant of their articles are reprinted here.

The Princeton men were deeply convinced that the new views meant a return to old errors long rejected. If the church accepted them she would reap a bitter harvest. Time has vindicated their stance. A fresh look at what they wrote will assist in the recovery of a more biblically-based approach to preaching and evangelism today.
