*New Puritan Paperback*

In 1865 Clement Evans, a Liverpool publisher, issued a book called Gems of Thought for Every Day in the Year, from the Writings of an Eminent Divine of the Seventeenth Century. That ‘eminent divine’ was William Gurnall (1616–1679), the Puritan minister and author of The Christian in Complete Armour.

As Joseph Hall (1574–1656), Bishop of Norwich, noted, ‘Every day is a little life: and our whole life is but a day repeated.’ Every day, therefore, should be a day to grow in our devotion to the Lord and in our understanding of his ways.

These ‘gems of thought’ from Gurnall’s writings will serve as helpful daily prompts for meditation, and will, if read prayerfully, lead readers to set their minds on heavenly things.

James Walker (1821–1891) was well equipped to produce a survey of Scottish theology. He was known as ‘a good classical scholar.’ He was just as at home in the Latin works of the great Scottish theologians as the homely English prose of their sermons. He was among the most able of a generation of ministers who had not yet lost access to the older sixteenth- and seventeenth-century systems of theology.

And among the pastoral duties of his office, he devoted significant time to the study of Scottish church history and theology. His brother recounted that ‘his chair was often surrounded by big volumes, which spoke for the extent of his reading. His acquaintance with Scottish history and theology is shown in his Cunningham Lectures.’ His biographer similarly stated, ‘He was well acquainted with the writers of the seventeenth century. He knew all the incidents of the Covenanting struggle. He had studied in all their bearings the principles that animated the Covenanters, and with many of these principles he deeply sympathized. For him, the history of the Secession movements of the eighteenth century seemed to have a special attraction. Hardly any man outside the communion of the religious bodies that eventually formed the United Presbyterian Church, and few within them, could be better acquainted than he was with their divisions and controversies.’

The value of his extensive study of Scottish theology, presented to the public in Theology and Theologians, has long been recognized. John MacLeod speaks of Walker as ‘a remarkably well-read and capable divine.’ He acknowledges this book to be ‘a masterly work … in its own department, a classic.’ Nick Needham calls it ‘the standard work on the subject.’ These testimonies are eminently justified.

The preparation of this edition has been something of a labour of love. As discussed above, Walker’s illness prevented him from offering to the public a properly documented edition with references and notes. In order to enhance the value of Walker’s work, and to guide readers into the treasure trove of books he was referencing, nearly all his citations have now been referenced. The painstaking work of tracing his references has cost many hours. But they were hours spent among the theologians of Scotland—and who would fail to regard that as time well spent! Further references have been added to helpful secondary literature on many of the figures Walker mentions. As well as including references, all Latin has been translated.

The opportunity has also been taken to add the available sermons of James Walker to this volume. These are taken from his James Walker D.D. of Carnwath Free Church: Essays, Papers and Sermons, and the Free Church Pulpit, and demonstrate his abilities as a preacher. The essays and papers have not been added, as they are of lesser spiritual interest and value.

I have no doubt that those who carefully work through this volume will be spiritually enriched and drawn to read more widely in Scottish theology. It is important in this connection to highlight other relevant Banner of Truth books, which will also aid in the exploration of the finest of the genre:

Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834–1892) was the famous pastor of the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London in the nineteenth century. Under his preaching, the once-dying church was revived and became an engine for evangelism, pastoral training, missions, and church planting. But Spurgeon wanted to see more than just his church thriving. He had a heart to see other pastors equipped and churches strengthened. So in January 1865, he launched The Sword and the Trowel, a monthly magazine named in honour of those who rebuilt the city of Jerusalem under Nehemiah’s leadership. In Spurgeon’s day, as in ours, those who would repair the walls of Jerusalem need both the sword to combat error and the trowel to build up the church, and this magazine sought to equip pastors to do just that.

This collection of articles from The Sword and the Trowel provides a first-hand look at Spurgeon’s vision for ministry. In it, readers will find Spurgeon’s convictions on church structure, including meaningful membership, church discipline, and the biblical roles of elders and deacons; his practical teaching on pastoral ministry, such as sermon preparation, leading congregational prayer, and reaching the next generation; and his counsel for facing the personal trials of the ministry, from financial pressures, to the fear of man, discouragement, and much more.

Though written more than a century ago, these articles remain a source of wisdom for today’s pastors navigating the same perennial challenges. This volume is an essential guide for any leader labouring to maintain a faithful, Christ-centred ministry in the twenty-first century.

*New Retypeset Edition*

Few things are more helpful to preachers than the thoughts of a great preacher. In this volume we have such Thoughts on Preaching from the illustrious pen of Dr James W. Alexander. First published posthumously in 1864, it contains sections from his private writings with their illuminating comments on the work of the ministry. Here too are his Letters to Young Ministers on such themes as Devotion to the Work of the Ministry, The Happiness of Christ’s Ministry, Extempore Preaching, as well as papers on Expository Preaching, Discipline and Study, and related themes.

In an area of Christian literature already well endowed, Alexander’s work makes a particular contribution in a number of ways. Firstly, it stimulates thought as well as informs, and thus meets an important need in the preacher’s life. Secondly, it contains a variety of material, and is therefore helpful to the novice and the experienced preacher alike. Thirdly, it instructs the mind and heart to see the preaching of the gospel as the most important and heroic task in the world, and one which demands the consecration of the whole man to God. All who have a concern and responsibility for the preaching of the word of God should find something to help and encourage them in these pages.

Perhaps two of the most common reasons for men leaving the ministry today are moral failure and depression, or ‘burn-out.’ The two addresses in this booklet have been selected from C. H. Spurgeon’s well-known Lectures to My Students (also published by the Trust), with the hope that they will be of real practical help to pastors. ‘The Minister’s Self-Watch’ will help you guard your heart, life, and teaching. ‘The Minister’s Fainting Fits’ will supply much needed encouragement to persevere in the work the Master has given you to do.

‘May he in whose hand are the churches and their pastors bless these words to younger brethren in the ministry, and if so I shall count it more than a full reward, and shall greatly praise the Lord.’ — C. H. Spurgeon

Nick Needham here draws pen portraits of twelve shapers of Christianity—those whose thought and writings have profoundly contributed to the way we think about our faith today. As the author notes, ‘we may well find that in becoming acquainted with them, we catch some glimpse of God’s truth and glory that was evident to them, yet which we perhaps do not see so clearly. Studying our Christian past can in this way become an eminently practical and spiritual discipline.’

‘Dr Needham relentlessly reminds us that history is His-Story, the story of God’s saving purposes in this world. This is a necessary, even vital, reminder that the unfolding of history is not haphazard, or determined by powerful personalities and socio-economic events. Our God reigns.’

One of the great strengths Christians carry through life is our assurance regarding the future. The church’s understanding of eschatology, or the ‘last days,’ goes far deeper than discussions of end-time chronology. Because Christ is risen from the dead, we need never fear death; because he is king over heaven and earth, we cannot be anxious about the fate of our world.

In this concluding book of his Texts that Transform series, Terry Johnson points us to an eternity of victory and praise that awaits every believer in Christ. But what of those who do not belong to him? Here we find our motivation to fulfil the Great Commission to ‘go and make disciples of all nations.’

Our hope is a certain one, for we know that ‘at the name of Jesus every knee [shall] bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.’

Book Description

Of the many sermons which Calvin preached on the Book of Isaiah between July 1556 and August 1559, only eleven were published in his lifetime. Seven of them are newly translated here, all on Isaiah’s Fourth Servant Song (Isa. 52:13–53:12). In a series of stunning scenes which have no parallel in prophetic literature, Isaiah delineates the figure of one who is both sacrificial victim and God’s agent of salvation. In identifying the Servant with Jesus Christ, Calvin is at one with the witness of the universal church. In this memorable sermon series, the Reformer explores with sensitivity Isaiah’s contrasting themes of humiliation and exaltation, death and resurrection. At the same time, he demonstrates how great is the power by which God wrests victory from defeat, and how immeasurable is our debt to redeeming love.

Book Description

In the forty years prior to these lectures, Scotland had been favoured with true revivals, for example, at Moulin in 1800; in Skye in 1814; in Arran in 1818; in Lewis in 1834; and at Kilsyth in 1839. This adds a special lustre to this book. It is no theoretical reflection on revival. Those who delivered these lectures knew what they wrote about. Indeed, it was “in consequence of… the time of refreshing” at Kilsyth that “it was thought expedient that a course of lectures should be delivered in Glasgow on the subject of Revivals of Religion, for the purpose of communicating right views and removing prejudices on that all-important topic.”

But it was no mere experience that formed these men’s views on revival. Indeed, references to contemporary events are remarkably few, either relating to revivals of the time, such as Kilsyth, or the momentous events which would lead to the formation of the Free Church of Scotland. Rather, it was theological conviction, born from a close study of Scripture and informed by church history which led these men to the views on revival that they held. And it is these timeless truths which are outlined in this volume.

Book Description

The Epistle to the Romans is both a highly personal letter and an authoritative theological treatise, inspired by the Holy Spirit and penned by the Apostle Paul. It contains clear and simple truths which serve to comfort the most childlike believer, as well as intricate examinations of the purposes and mission of God.

Paul himself, having been changed from the persecutor Saul into an ambassador for Christ, is evidence of the saving and transforming power of God that he expounds in his letter. He anticipates the questions of Christians examining their faith throughout the ages, and rebuts errors and heresies with which we still grapple today.

Sinclair Ferguson meditates on the grace and tenderness of God which Paul so plainly and boldly proclaims, and painstakingly unravels the most complex passages. His is a reliable and experienced voice guiding ordinary Christians to the very heights of New Testament theology.

Let’s Study Romans is suitable for individual or group use, and includes a Study Guide to aid readers in grasping and retaining the logical progression of Paul’s thought.

James Smith of Cheltenham is perhaps not a name you know. If you have seen it before, it may have been in a few particular places. You may have noticed a collection of devotions called The Believer’s Daily Remembrancer, one of the few productions of his pen still more or less available. You may have noted his name as one of the preachers on the occasion of the opening of the Metropolitan Tabernacle in 1861, when he preached a sweet sermon on effectual calling.

As well as serving in a number of churches, James Smith was a prolific writer, and his daily readings and devotionals in particular were highly esteemed and hugely popular. ‘My object,’ said our author, ‘is to lead the mind from self—to Jesus; from sin—to salvation; from the troubles of life—to the comforts of the gospel. My aim is to humble the sinner—and exalt the Saviour; to strip the creature—and place the crown on the head of God’s free grace! I cannot ascribe too much to Jesus—or too little to man!’

Some daily devotionals are longer, and demand a fair amount of time. Some are briefer, and take a few moments to read over. These golden nuggets of truth will take only a moment to consider, but will give you matter for a day’s consideration and comfort.

Book Description

When the aged J. C. Ryle announced he was to resign from the office of bishop of Liverpool, his friends encouraged him to publish a selection of sermons as a memorial to his sixty years of ministry, from country parson to diocesan bishop.

The resulting selection, chosen by one of Ryle’s colleagues in the Liverpool diocese, T. J. Madden, exemplifies the beating heart of biblical religion which epitomized Ryle’s approach to ministry. The title of the selection is taken from one of the sermons, and the themes covered in this volume will be found to equip readers, as they did their first hearers, to run the Christian race with endurance.

Themes such as regeneration, saving faith, righteousness, the character and privileges of the true Christian, the character of Jesus Christ, and heaven, among others, all serve to draw out the doctrinal teachings of the Scriptures, whilst applying those teachings to the practical realities of the Christian life.

Readers familiar with Ryle’s other works, including his Expository Thoughts on the Gospels, Holiness, Practical Religion, and Knots Untied to name but a few, will recognize in these sermons that same clarity of expression and practical wisdom which are a hallmark of his style.

In England, Ryle stands in the foremost rank of those who have held forth the word of life and fought the good fight of faith. He is one of the Lord’s standard-bearers of the late Victorian age. The ‘healthful spirit of God’s grace’ was upon him. Being dead he continues to speak.

Book Description

In Unveiling the Cross, Ross Blackburn examines the Isaiah 6 vision of the Lord, ‘high and lifted up,’ in the light of New Testament revelation. Why did this encounter affect the prophet’s life so radically? What did he understand of the One on the throne? How is this ‘Day of Atonement’ scene connected to other heavenly visions in the Bible? In discussing these questions, the author discourses with two classic works, Hugh Martin’s The Atonement, and Sinclair B. Ferguson’s The Whole Christ. His treatment of Scripture – from the origin of ‘uncleanness’ in Genesis to the Lamb on the throne in Revelation – is incisive and masterful. Each page magnifies the Christ of the cross, the Christ of the throne, and the Christ who intercedes for his people. It is impossible to encounter this Lord of Hosts and remain unchanged.

‘Ross Blackburn combines the well-honed and enviable skills of an Old Testament scholar who shares his learning without flaunting it, of a well-read theologian who leads readers to doctrinal riches, and a pastor who clearly loves and cares for Christ’s flock.  Unveiling the Cross is a richly textured and enriching work, written in a style that is as engaging as it is informative – in fact the very kind of book that simultaneously helps pastors expound Scripture (without doing the work for them!) and also enables all of us “ordinary” members to be both well taught and well nourished.’

John Whitecross’s book stands out as a resource that will assist to memorably teach the catechism in a family, small group, or formal setting. First published in 1828, the book has been gently modernized.

Whitecross was a schoolmaster who knew how to gain people’s attention and help them retain what they learned. This book can also be recommended reading for children aged ten and over. It is a valuable treasury of illustrative matter for all those who have the responsibility of making biblical teaching interesting in home, school, or church.

Book Description

Those who are inclined to view Christian salvation as “fire insurance,” vital in eternity but irrelevant in this world, fail to understand the pervasiveness of Christian thought. Does ‘the mind of Christ’ extend beyond religion to what one may think of non-religious realms? Does taking ‘every thought captive’ include our thoughts about gender, sexual relations, marriage, family, children, and child-rearing? Indeed it does. Scripture addresses all these issues.

In this third book of the Texts that Transform series, Terry Johnson recounts his matured understanding of the place of family relationships in God’s plan – a plan which not only transforms the domestic sphere but highlights the essential role of marriage and family in the Kingdom of God.

Description

This product contains Volumes 3 and 4 of Collected Writings of James Henley Thornwell, the third volume may properly be entitled Theological and Controversial and the fourth, Ecclesiastical.

Volume 3: Theological and Controversial
The third volume will contain an elaborate discussion of the canon, the authority of Scripture, papal infallibility, the mass, the validity of popish baptism, and the claims of the Romish church to be reckoned any church at all. In the discussion of popish baptism the author was led into a thorough consideration of the Christian doctrine of justification, and hence that whole argument might well be placed in the second volume. Connected as it was, however, by other ties with the Romish controversy, it was judged best, after mature reflection, to place it in the volume of the theological and polemic writings.
Volume 4: Ecclesiastical
In the fourth volume will be gathered whatever else Dr Thornwell has left behind him touching the question of the church.

Description

This product contains Volumes 1 and 2 of Collected Writings of James Henley Thornwell, the first volume may properly be entitled Theological and the second, Theological and Ethical.

Volume 1: Theological
The [first] volume contains sixteen lectures in theology. All these constitute his discussion of that portion of theology which relates to God and to moral government essentially considered, or to the same as modified by the Covenant of Works. To this volume, by way of appendix, are added his Inaugural Discourse, his Questions on the Lectures to his classes, his Analysis of Calvin’s Institutes and his examination questions thereupon. The next volume will discuss that portion of theology which relates to moral government as modified by the Covenant of Grace. These two volumes are not a treatise on theology written by our distinguished professor, but consist of all that he left behind him upon those topics, gathered together since his decease by the hand of friendship, and systematized as well as possible according to his conception of the science of theology.

Volume 2: Theological and Ethical
The sixteen lectures may be reckoned his very latest productions. Upon some of the topics in the second volume, what we have to present the reader will be some of his earlier writings; there is not one of them, however, but bears the same impressive genius—not one of them but his instinct with the same unction of the Spirit of truth and love. Accompanying what the second volume will contain upon the Doctrines of Grace, there will be found a partial discussion of the morals which necessarily flow out of those doctrines.

Set Description

This set comprises the 8 volumes of Martyn Lloyd-Jones’s expositions of the book of Ephesians in a newly re-typeset edition.

Background

When a spiritual history of the 20th century comes to be written it will be bound to include mention not only of the far-reaching influence of Dr Lloyd-Jones’ ministry at Westminster Chapel, London (1938–1968), but of the remarkable fact that subsequently the published volumes of his New Testament expository sermons have had a circulation unprecedented for such material during the last century.

At a time of general doubt as to the relevance and appeal of preaching, the author has shown that, when the message of Scripture is taught with Spirit-given authority, and in popular form, it retains its power over the heart and mind and conscience. The help which thousands have experienced from the sermons already published is, in the first instance, due to this fact.

It was the sermons on this first chapter of Ephesians, commenced at Westminster on Sunday mornings in the autumn of 1954, that proved to be the start of the author’s prolonged treatment of various New Testament books. By that date Dr Lloyd-Jones had been more than 25 years in the ministry and his convictions on how Scripture should be taught were fully matured. The sermons on Ephesians were, therefore, in a sense a new point of departure. The series on the Epistle to the Romans was to follow in 1955.

There are few things which any parent dreads more than the thought of outliving his or her child, or grandchild. The deaths of parents, friends, relatives and even one’s spouse are terrible indeed, but the death of one’s child possesses a peculiar kind of horror.

In four brief chapters, Peter Barnes draws on his own experience to offer help to those who have suffered such a loss. As he says in the Introduction, ‘This is not a work of apologetics, but a brief attempt to understand and work through grief, for myself, my family, and for any other readers. It has only heightened the sense of my own need to receive comfort myself. Such comfort can only come from the God who is our creator and our redeemer. The hope remains that God will use this book to minister to and bless any of his people who have suffered the agony of losing a child.’

Product Description

Of the many volumes written on the Great ‌Awakening which changed the course of American history in the 1740s, none is more interesting than Archibald Alexander’s classic account recorded in this volume. Taking as his starting point William Tennent’s unpretentious theological school (contemptuously called the ‘Log College’), Alexander proceeds through a series of rich biographical chapters to trace the ministerial work of the students who entered pastorates at a time when deadness and formality reigned. ‘Never, perhaps, had the expectation of reaching heaven at last been more general or more confident.’

With Alexander we relive the story of their subsequent toil and success – their preaching and spiritual passion, their experiences of the divine energy of the Holy Spirit, their flesh and blood failings are all graphically portrayed.

Whether we read of Gilbert Tennent of whom Whitefield said, ‘hypocrites must either soon be converted or enraged at his preachings’, or of Samuel Blair, ‘a great textuary who studied the sacred oracles above all other things’, or of Samuel Finley who believed that ‘nothing more helped digestion than a hearty laugh’ and whose glorious death makes unforgettable reading, Alexander holds and moves us throughout. And such was his intention. Commenting on the fact that ‘none of the distinguished ministers of that period, except William Tennent, senior reached the age of seventy; and some of the most able and successful among them did not even arrive at the age of forty’, he writes: ‘These men may be said to have lived fast. They did much for their Lord in a short time. Being burning as well as shining lights, they were themselves consumed while they gave light to others. Oh that a race of ministers, like-minded, burning with a consuming zeal, might be raised up among us!

“We cannot cleanse ourselves; God must work in us with power. That is why the Holy Spirit is fire. We must go back into the oven when God chooses to make us new.”

– John Calvin

Book Description

Translated from the French of 1562 by Robert White

Of the many sermons which Calvin preached on the Synoptic Gospels, only the first sixty-five were recorded and published, under the title Sermons on the Harmony or Concordance of the Three Evangelists, Matthew, Mark and Luke (1562). Eighteen of these sermons appear here, for the first time in English translation. They focus on the events of Jesus’ ministry in Galilee: his baptism, his testing by Satan, the calling of his first disciples, his teaching and his works of healing.

In consecutive sermons the preacher traces the drama of Jesus’ confrontation with the forces of darkness and unbelief, which make him a prophet without honour in his own country. For the time being, his identity as Messiah remains hidden. Already, however, he is filled with the Spirit of God who empowers and directs him; already Satan must contend with one stronger than he; already the poor have good news preached to them; already God’s kingdom is present in Jesus’ gracious words and mighty works.

These sermons, the last Calvin was to preach on a New Testament text, reveal the Reformer at his best: a lucid interpreter of Scripture, an engaging preacher, and a pastor passionate to present every soul in his care mature in Christ.

Why should one have a high view of the visible church and its ministry? The short answer is, Because this is what the Bible requires. Jesus said ‘I will build my church.’ He charged the disciples to baptize their converts into the church and in the process teach them all of his commandments (Matt. 16:18; 28:18–20).

Bible texts not only transform one’s personal life, but also shape one’s outlook on the church–its ministry and mission. In Texts that Transform: Church and Ministry, Terry Johnson shows how the Bible determines our understanding of such things as a Christian’s calling in general, the specific role of the minister, the shape of public worship, the content of the church’s public services, and the character of the day on which those services are conducted. Why do we do what we do in life and ministry? Because these are the things that the Bible–the word of God–directs us to do.

Book Description

In 1786, at the age of twenty-two, Alexander Stewart became parish minister of Moulin, near Pitlochry, Scotland. He was as yet unconverted. Sermons from those early years he would later denounce as ‘youthful trifles, produced in the season of ignorance and darkness, possessing nothing of the savour of the gospel, abounding in errors, fit only to be pitied, fit only to be destroyed.’ When the change came it deeply impacted not only his preaching but his congregation. At the time of his settlement in Moulin most were as ignorant of the gospel as he was. As he puts it himself, ‘The opinion of their own works recommending them to the favour of God, and procuring a reward from his bounty, was almost universal.’ Now they began to think as differently about such things as their minister did. Indeed, it was not long before Moulin was in the grip of a revival that resulted in many conversions.

James Sievewright’s biography, long out of print, is an invaluable account of the steps by which Stewart was led from darkness to light, of the revival that followed, and of Stewart’s subsequent ministries in Dingwall and in Edinburgh. It introduces us to David Black, the young evangelical minister who played a major role in Stewart’s conversion, and is enriched by a selection of the letters that passed between them. It shows us, too, what a remarkable and far-reaching ministry an unconverted minister may one day exercise if God should be pleased to save him.

Here we have the greatest of nineteenth-century preachers setting forth timeless truths from Bunyan, with infectious enthusiasm about his favourite author. ‘The reason for his liking is not far to seek,’ writes Spurgeon’s son and successor in his Introduction. ‘They both loved “the Book of books.”’ Just so, today’s reader will come away from these chapters with a renewed appreciation not only of Bunyan and Spurgeon, but of the truth and wisdom of the Scriptures.

Book Description

The Diary and Journal of David Brainerd is of much more than merely historical interest. The first internationally recognized biography ever to be published, it has had a profound impact on successive generations of Christians around the world.

The Diary covers the period from April 1742 to October 1747, and although written as a private and personal record, was published in abridged form by the great New England pastor and theologian Jonathan Edwards in 1749.

Brainerd wrote the Journal, which covers the twelve months from June 1745 to June 1746, at the request of the Scottish Society for Propagating Christian Knowledge, which was supporting his missionary work amongst the indigenous peoples of North America. As Sir Marcus Loane has noted in They Were Pilgrims, ‘the Diary and Journal were each written for a distinct purpose, and each had its separate character. The Diary is a remarkable record of the interior life of the soul, and its entries still throb with the tremendous earnestness of a man who whose heart was aflame for God. The Journal is an objective history of the missionary work of twelve months, and its details are an astonishing testimony to the grace of God in the lives of men.’

Jonathan Edwards’ own ‘Reflections and Observations’ on Brainerd’s life, included in this volume, are, according to Iain H. Murray in his Jonathan Edwards: A New Biography, ‘among the most important descriptive pages on the Christian life which Edwards ever wrote.’

Between 1742 and his death in 1747 David Brainerd took the gospel to the North American Indians of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. He willingly ran any risk and accepted any hardship to fulfil his calling as a missionary. The amount of work which he achieved in such unpromising and difficult circumstances now seems almost incredible. Moreover his total dedication to the cause of making Christ known inspired the finest of missionaries who followed in his footsteps.

Few books have done so much to promote prayer and missionary action as The Diary and Journal of David Brainerd.

—Sinclair B. Ferguson

*New Title*

This new book is a rare combination of devotional, memoir, and Bible study that brings the reader into a sense of relationship with the author and renewed connection to God’s word. Travelling through Terry Johnson’s conversion, call, and growth in Christian understanding and character, one reflects on the passages that have influenced his spiritual life. The non-Christian reader will find a winsome companion and instructor in foundational theological truths; the Christian will be challenged to consider what verses have guided his or her own path.

The truth of the gospel, the dangers of hypocrisy and legalism, freedom from anxiety, the urgency of evangelism – these are all helpful topics. But it becomes clear that Terry’s real passion is the beauty, the humanity and the holiness of the Lord Jesus Christ, and this is the heart of this warm and pastoral book.

*New Release*

When discussing the ‘last things,’ what often comes to our minds is the book of Revelation and its striking visions – and often unhelpful speculation about their details. David McKay focuses instead on the Bible’s clear message about things to come: the Lord’s return, the certainty of judgment, the resurrection, and the reality of eternity. In doing so he returns to the real purpose of God’s revelation – providing comfort, warning, and strength to endure.

About the Author

David McKay is Professor of Systematic Theology, Ethics and Apologetics at the Reformed Theological College, Belfast, and Minister of Shaftesbury Square Reformed Presbyterian Church in Belfast. He is the author of An Ecclesiastical Republic (1997), The Bond of Love (2001) and A Christian’s Pocket Guide to Humanity (2021) and has contributed to a number of theological journals and books. He is married to Valerie.

Christians have long recognized the book of Psalms to be the great handbook of the spiritual life. Martin Luther thought of it as the Bible in miniature, and John Calvin prized it as ‘an anatomy of all parts of the soul.’

This mini-guide introduces the reader to this precious book. David Murray shows how the Psalms speak of Christ, whilst answering questions regarding the interpretation of some difficult passages. He explains how the Psalms ought to be used in worship, counselling, witnessing, and singing, so that believers might glorify and enjoy God each day.

*New for Christmas 2023*

These thirty-eight meditations on Christ’s incarnation from the pen of C. H. Spurgeon are an ideal companion in the approach to the Christmas season. Indeed, they point believers just as emphatically toward the second advent of Christ, and so are a valuable guide at any time of year. Brief, powerful, and vivid, each devotional sparks renewed wonder at the grace of God in the incarnation of his Son.

Endorsements

‘Good Tidings of Great Joy takes us all by the hand to lead us to Christ. Here those who celebrate Christmas but privately realize they know too little about its significance will find a clear, straightforward, and attractive explanation of its real meaning. Here too, those who enjoy Christmas chiefly because they love Christ and want to know and love him better, will find encouragement and joy. And perhaps too some, who never celebrate “Christmas” and as a result are in danger of giving the incarnation far less attention than Scripture does, will find their affection for Christ rekindled or increased.’

-From the Foreword by Dr Sinclair Ferguson

This warm and encouraging book of daily devotionals, along with Bible verses suitable to each topic, shows forth a pastor’s heart and a disciple’s love of Scripture. One senses, moving through the year, topics and verses that were especially treasured to Robert Macdonald, presented so winsomely that they soon become precious to the reader. Each day, the author presents fresh biblical insights, interwoven with wisdom from the Puritans, amusing and yet helpful anecdotes from his own nineteenth-century Scotland, and snippets from hymns and poems.

Perhaps the most compelling recommendation of Macdonald’s book remains the one written by one of his fellow ministers and friends Andrew Bonar:

‘My dear Robert, From Day to Day is a book of most pleasant and profitable reading. It is 365 meditations—as many as Samuel Rutherford’s Letters—as many as Enoch’s years of earthly pilgrimage and walking with God. There is a clearness and pointedness in your style of writing that at once attracts the reader, and, dipping his rod in the honey, he finds his eyes enlightened.’

They mostly consist of sermons; but what sermons! They are not so sparkling as those of Henry Smith, nor so profound as those of Owen, nor so rhetorical as those of Howe, or so pithy as those of Watson, nor so fascinating as those of Brooks; and yet they are second to none of these. For solid, sensible instruction forcibly delivered they cannot be surpassed. Manton is not brilliant, but he is always clear; he is not oratorical, but he is powerful; he is not striking, but he is deep. There is not a poor discourse in the whole collection: he is evenly good, constantly excellent. Ministers who do not know Manton need not wonder if they are themselves unknown.’ — CHARLES SPURGEON

‘The matter herein delivered will, I conceive, be found holy and useful’, wrote Thomas Manton in the ‘Advertisement to the Reader’ which prefaces his commentary on James. His concern to explain the meaning of the Epistle of James in order to exhort the people of God to faith and good works is evident: ‘If any expression should be found that savoureth not of true piety, or suiteth not with reverence to God, charity to men, or zeal of good works, I do, from my soul, wish it expunged, and shall upon conviction take the next occasion to retract it.’

Such pronouncements are not commonplace in many modern commentaries, but they summarise Manton’s attitude to his own work. Previously published by the Trust in the Geneva series, this commentary brings Manton’s expository gifts to bear on the Epistle of James as he seeks not only to inform, but also to form his hearers to be ‘doers of the word’.

‘The people of God have ever been exercised with two sorts of enemies–persecutors [external foes] and sectaries [internal foes]: it is hard to say which is worst’. So Thomas Manton begins his ‘To the Reader’ section prefacing his Commentary on Jude. He describes how the threat to the Reforming churches came not only from Roman Catholicism, but increasingly from ‘Libertines and a yokeless generation of men, who are most reproachful to religion and most troublesome’. He clearly understood that some of the gravest threats to the health of the Church come from within its own ranks, and believed Jude to be particularly concerned with such threats.

As well as Manton’s Commentary on Jude, this volume contains Meat out of the Eater, Or, Hopes of Unity in and By Divided and Distracted Times, a sermon preached to the House of Commons on June 30, 1647; England’s Spiritual Languishing; with The Causes and Cure, preached to the House of Commons on June 28, 1648; How May we Cure Distractions in Holy Duties, a sermon on Matthew 15:7,8 (‘Ye hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying, This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.’); How Ought We to Improve Our Baptism?, a sermon on Acts 2:28 (‘Be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins’); Man’s Impotency to Help Himself Out of His Misery, a sermon on Romans 5:6, (‘For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.’); The Scripture Sufficient Without Unwritten Traditions, a sermon on 2 Thessalonians 2:15 (‘Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word or our epistle.’); finally, there is included an editorial note on Smectymnuus Redivivus, a work composed by five ministers to answer Bishop Hall’s argument for the divine right of episcopacy and for which Manton provided a preface.

Book Description

This product consists of Volume 5 of The Works of Thomas Manton  (1620-1677). Manton’s Works present us with an outstanding example of what was most characteristic in the ministry of the English Puritans: careful, solid, warm-hearted applicatory exposition of the Scriptures. The entire twenty-two volumes are composed of sermons— the legacy of a lifetime devoted to the patient and systematic teaching and application of God’s word. Like his younger contemporary, John Flavel, Manton’s Works are characterised by great pastoral concern and a balanced wisdom. He was, said William Bates in his funeral sermon, ‘endowed with an extraordinary knowledge in the Scriptures’ and this enabled him to exercise a sustained ministry of verse-by-verse preaching without losing the interest of his congregation.

The set is a facsimile of the James Nisbet & Co. edition of 1870.

Book Description

Many twenty-first-century Christians ‌still read the works and love the memory of the remarkable Scottish brotherhood that included Robert Murray M‘Cheyne and Andrew and Horatius Bonar. But the name of Alexander Moody Stuart (1809–98), whom they all esteemed so much, has been forgotten. Yet it took only one encounter with his preaching for M‘Cheyne to say, ‘I have found the man.’

Now, this new edition of Alexander Moody Stuart: A Memoir will throw light on a life and ministry which were profoundly influential—a ministry in which Moody Stuart was, variously, a pioneer rural missionary in an island fishing community; a capable church planter in a growing city; a clear and searching preacher; a much-loved pastor; a caring husband and father; and a committed advocate for overseas missionary endeavour.

Alexander Moody Stuart’s long life and ministry encompassed many of the defining events and debates in the Scottish church in the middle and later nineteenth century, including that which led to the formation of the Free Church of Scotland in 1843. But far from being defined by these important debates, his ministry was principally marked by contemporaries for its deep spirituality, earnestness, and originality.

This well-paced and engaging memoir, partly autobiographical and completed by its subject’s eldest son, covers the life, work, friendships, and challenges of one who was fully engaged with the people under his spiritual care, and who was also a willing defender of orthodox belief in an age of rapid change in approaches to Scripture. As Sinclair B. Ferguson notes in the Foreword, ‘like Andrew Bonar’s memoir of M‘Cheyne, there is a touch of heaven about these pages.’

It is hoped that the republication of this long-forgotten book will go some way to lift Alexander Moody Stuart out of relative obscurity—a man who, in his allotted time and circumstances, exercised a deep and penetrating ministry of the word, the character and aroma of which contain much to stimulate and inspire those engaged in that same spiritual work today.

This fresh edition includes numerous illustrations and an extensive appendix containing several of Moody Stuart’s sermons and addresses, and other documents of interest.

Commendations

‘Long forgotten and hard to obtain, Alexander Moody Stuart is a book for any Christian to enjoy, and every Christian will find it richly instructive, graciously challenging, and wonderfully inspiring. And for ministers of the gospel it is quite simply a ‘must have’. While it ranks among the finest Christian biographies of a past century, the effect of reading it will be a fresh desire to love Christ more and serve him better in the present century.’

—Sinclair B. Ferguson

‌‘There are few ministerial biographies that are better worth reading than Moody Stuart’s Life by his son.’

—Principal John Macleod (1872–1948)
in Scottish Theology

‌‘He has poetry in his soul, and beyond that, a heart like that of Rutherford, fired with love to the altogether Lovely One.’

—C. H. Spurgeon (1834–92)
Pastor of the Metropolitan Tabernacle Baptist Church, London

‘I know not a greater master in spiritual analysis.’

—Dr John ‘Rabbi’ Duncan (1796–1870)

‌‘Few were honoured to wield an influence so profound and far-reaching.’

—Address from the Free Presbytery of Edinburgh upon
Moody Stuart’s ministerial diamond jubilee in 1897

‌‘… a man who was the first and earliest of a well-defined and very remarkable school of preaching; who was also its patriarch and survivor; and who, besides being the originator, was himself the most original man not only in that school but, according to my judgment, in the whole Scottish pulpit during the long span of his ministerial career.’

NEW REPRINT

Book Description

J. C. Ryle described Daniel Rowland (1711–1790) as ‘one of the spiritual giants of the eighteenth century.’ Lady Huntingdon considered him to be ‘second only to Whitefield.’ Howel Harris wrote of him, ‘In his pulpit he is second to St Paul,’ while others acclaimed him as ‘the greatest preacher in Europe.’ Yet he has been one of the least known leaders of that age.

The loss of manuscripts shortly after his death, the Welsh language barrier, and the fact that all his closest friends were also preachers rather than authors, all contributed to leave only a shadowy impression of his greatness. However, after many years of work, Dr Eifion Evans succeeded in breaking through a multitude of difficulties to present for the first time a full-scale biography of Daniel Rowland.

J. C. Ryle writes of Daniel Rowland, ‘Never, perhaps, did any preacher exalt Christ more. . . . No British preacher of the eighteenth century kept together in one district such enormous congregations of souls for fifty years as Rowland did.’ And Dr D. M. Lloyd-Jones asks, ‘Has there been preaching which has had anything like the effect of his preaching since those days?’

At death, when reminded that he had been instrumental in the conversion of thousands to Christ, Rowland protested, ‘It is nothing. I die as a poor sinner depending fully and entirely on the merits of a crucified Saviour.’

This volume is a record of revivals, friendships with other leaders, persecutions and divisions, and the birth of a new age for Wales. Amidst it all, Dr Evans excels in showing what made Rowland the preacher and the humble Christian that he was. Dr Evans’ volume not only fills a major gap in church history, it is an inspiring testimony to New Testament Christianity.

Book Description

There are two intended audiences for discourses on the Christian ministry: the pastor or elder who cares for the church, and his congregation who are called to willing and prayerful submission. In Gospel Ministry, a collection of nine sermons delivered in his fruitful later years, John Owen addresses both.

Whether expounding the role of the Holy Spirit in shaping the ministry, presenting the purposes of the church, savouring God’s care of his people, or warning against being ashamed of the gospel, Owen’s teaching is invaluable for any minister – or member – of the body of Christ.

This book is complemented by its companion volume, Gospel Life, which beautifully sets forth the foundational steps of faith in Christ, assurance, and humble walking with him.

N.B. The sermons in this volume have been selected from The Works of John Owen, Volume 9, and modernised.

There are some questions common to all seekers after Christ. How can I know I truly have faith? What does it look like to be conformed to Jesus? How does God see me?

In Gospel Life, a posthumous compilation of thirteen sermons from the zenith of his preaching career, John Owen answers these questions with great compassion for the Christian who longs for growth and assurance. He draws on a wide range of Scripture to display the character of the Saviour, the acceptance of the Father, and the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit. Finally, Owen addresses the death and eternal hope of the believer, offering encouragement to all who love Christ.

A companion volume, Gospel Ministry, expounds the calling of Christian ministers, and exhorts congregations to loving and prayerful church life.

N.B. The sermons in this volume have been selected from The Works of John Owen, Volume 9, and modernised.

Book Description

Most experienced Christians are familiar with the Fruit of the Spirit listed in Galatians. Love, peace, patience, and so on are often considered both gracious marks of true Christian character and ideals to aim for. But what do they look like when lived to the fullest?

This book answers this question by studying the fullness of the Fruit of the Spirit in the life of Christ. In a warm and engaging style, Jonathan Cruse examines these godly attributes in the Lord’s example, comparing them with our own faltering efforts at holiness, and shows how only the power of God himself can truly conform us to Christ. The work is his, not ours – and this is good news for all those who yearn for greater sanctification.

About the Author

Jonathan Landry Cruse studied theology at Westminster Seminary California. He is an author, hymnwriter, and the pastor of Community Presbyterian Church in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Jonathan is husband to Kerri Ann and a father of three.

Book Description

‘Times of difficulty and of persecution have always been seasons in which God’s ministers shine with greatest lustre.’

These words from the memoir of Bridge contained in these collected Works of William Bridge serve to remind readers of the context in which William Bridge lived and worked.
Born in Cambridgeshire around 1600, Bridge entered Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 1619, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in 1623 and a master’s degree in 1626, before serving as a fellow of the college.

He was ordained a priest in the Church of England in 1627, and served in Saffron Walden and Colchester in Essex, then becoming rector of St Peter Hungate in Norwich in 1632.
In 1636 he was forced to flee to Rotterdam in Holland because of Bishop Matthew Wren’s campaign against nonconformity. There he co-pastored a church with John Ward and then Jeremiah Burroughs.

Returning to England in 1641, the following year he was appointed a member of the Westminster Assembly, and proved himself a noted Independent. That same year he accepted a position as town preacher at Yarmouth, where he organized an Independent church, and formally became its pastor in the autumn of 1643. He laboured there until 1662, when he was ejected by the Act of Uniformity.

Bridge spent his last years at Yarmouth and Clapham, Surrey, where he died in March 1670.
